Hypnotic Questions

What IS Hypnosis, and other questions…

What Is Hypnosis?

hypnosis [hip-noh-sis] noun, plural hypnoses [hip-noh-seez]
an artificially induced trance state resembling sleep, characterized by heightened susceptibility to suggestion.

Hypnosis is nothing more than being in a state of trance, whereby your conscious is bypassed and the hypnotist speaks direction to your unconscious. While in this state, you are in a very good position to receive and accept suggestions, which is why hypnosis is a common tool in therapy and coaching, as well as a good source of entertainment on the stage.

What Does Being In Trance Feel Like?

People often expect to feel “zoned out” or asleep or “other worldly” when in trance.

Which is not what happens at all. Trace is, simply, a deeply relaxed state where you are focused on a single thing (usually the hypnotist’s voice). You may still have an awareness of what’s going on around you (people often describe it as “I was aware of what was happening, I just wasn’t interested or paying attention to any of it”), and you’ll usually remember some or even all of what happened. It is not like sleep.

What If I Can't Come Out Of Trance?

Buddhist monks devote their entire lives to attempting to attain such deep levels of relaxation and remain in them forever, and even they can not manage that, they will sooner or later come back out of their trances. So you have nothing to worry about.

If at any time you decide you want to come out of trance, you’ll come out of trance – be it because you are not comfortable with what is happening, or there is some emergency.

Who Can't Be Hypnotised?

In the context of a stage show, there are a few categories of people who should not be hypnotised for reasons of safety (theirs, the audience’s and mine) –

  • Anyone who is pregnant
  • Anyone under the heavy influence of alcohol
  • Anyone under the influence of illicit drugs
  • Anyone on prescription medication
  • Anyone with physical injuries

Also, for legal reasons, nobody under the age of 18 may be hypnotised (although they can safely enjoy the show from their seat in the audience).

Who Can Be Hypnotised?

For stage hypnosis, anyone who is not listed above. For therapy hypnosis, anyone.

I Can't Be Hypnotised

Everyone is able to be hypnotised – if they want to be.

The truth of the matter is if you do not want to be hypnotised, then you won’t go into trance. Simple as that.

So yes, if you do not want to be hypnotised then you won’t be – which means if you don’t want to be hypnotised then please don’t volunteer to come up on stage! There is nothing more boring for the rest of the audience than for someone to volunteer with the aim of not being hypnotised, you’ll just kill the mood for everyone else, and the audience won’t appreciate you for it. Better for you to sit back in the audience and enjoy the show!

I've Never Been In Hypnosis / Trance Before.

Everyone enters a natural state of trace every day. Actually, at least twice a day usually – just before falling asleep, and just as you waken up. Most people easily enter a form of trance while at the movies, watching TV, driving long distance, or while reading a good book – if you’ve ever been reading a book and been so engrossed in it that you don’t notice someone entering the room, only to leap out of your skin when they say something – that’s a state of trace!

What If The Hypnotist Tries To Make Me Do Something I Don't Want To Do?

The person who is in control in trance is you! No hypnotist can ever make someone do something with which they feel uncomfortable or which goes against their morals (indeed, when you are in trance you are under the direct “control” of your unconscious mind, which is the most moral part of your being). You won’t do anything that goes against your morals, you won’t disclose treasured secrets, and any time you feel that you are being forced to do something against your will you will either not do it, or you’ll simply drop back out of trance.

You are in control at all times – indeed, it is perhaps the ultimate state of self-control!

Will You Make Me do Embarassing Things I'll Regret?

The entire aim of any of my shows if for everyone to fully enjoy themselves, both audience and participants alike. This means that at no time will I ask you to do anything which will embarrass you or anything which you will regret.

Yes, people will do daft things on stage, and that’s all part of the fun, but it is all done with the well-being of the participants uppermost in mind – after all, without participants there is no show!

Are Your Shows Suitable For Children?

My shows are designed to be entertaining for the whole family. there’s no vulgarity or crude tricks used, so everyone can enjoy them including children.

The only point to remember is that for legal reasons, people under the age of 18 may not be hypnotised for entertainment, but they can absolutely enjoy the show from their seat in the audience.

Are You A Qualified Hypnotist?

Yes.  I qualified as a Master Practitioner of Hypnosis in 2010 (which I have been using for coaching and therapy ever since), and I have continued to learn, study and train in more advanced hypnotic techniques and skills ever since (and I plan to continue so to do for the rest of my days – its a fascinating subject and I absolutely love it!)

I’ve also been training and certifying other people in various hypnotic skills since 2013.

What's The Difference Between Stage Hypnosis And Clinical Hypnosis?

They use the same techniques and they work on exactly the same principles.

The only difference is the intention of the outcome.  For clinical, coaching and therapy, the intent is to help the client to make positive changes; for stage, the intention is for the participant and the audience both to enjoy themselves and have a thoroughly entertaining time.

I Have a Problem, Can You Help Me?

During the show, that’s not possible.

However, if you do wish to seek coaching or other help, then I am a fully qualified in hypnosis, NLP and various other techniques and I have helped many people in that way.  The best thing to do is pop along to my coaching site at The Confidence Alchemist, and take things from there, or drop me a line to arrange a chat to explore things further.

Can You Teach Me Hypnosis?

IMG_6541I am a qualified trainer of Hypnosis, and I have taught and certified many people in the UK, USA, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam since 2013. I do run Hypnosis training courses from time to time, or I’d be happy to discuss bespoke training if that was more your thing. Get in touch if you want to have a chat about it.

Hypnosis - Isn't That Just All In The Mind?
